Antônio Francisco Bonfim Lopes

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Antônio Francisco Bonfim Lopes , known as Nem (born May 24, 1976 in Rio de Janeiro ) is a Brazilian drug dealer. For a long time he was the main drug trafficker in the Rocinha , Brazil's largest favela . Over the years, Nem rose to head the criminal organization Amigos dos Amigos ( English: Friends of Friends), which in turn determines drug traffic and social events in the Rocinha and other favelas. Nem, who has been the most wanted criminal in Rio de Janeiro for years, was discovered and caught by the police in the trunk of a car in November 2011 while trying to leave the Rocinha unnoticed. He had previously tried unsuccessfully to end the search for him by faking his own death and burial.

After his arrest, the police tried to use a Unidade de Polícia Pacificadora to gain control of the Rocinha favela. However, due to police violence and the resulting lack of acceptance among the population as well as a lack of financial and structural support from the state, the peace police were unable to perform their tasks or only inadequately. Rogério Avelino da Silva ("Rogério 157"), Nem's deputy, tried to fill the power vacuum by capturing Nem and taking his place. As a result, at the end of 2017, Nem's supporters invaded the Rocinha in order to bloodily drive Rogério 157.
