The district belongs to the sub-prefecture Zona Sul , the southern part of Rio de Janeiro, and houses, u. a. because of the proximity to the port, many shops and trading companies. The majority of the population belongs to the emerging Brazilian middle class. The district, which is located north of the districts of Flamengo and south of Glória , is known primarily for the Palácio do Catete , pronunciation : [ paˈlasju du kaˈtetʃi ], today's Museum of the Republic ( Museu da República ).

Many villas with historically and architecturally significant buildings still date from the colonial era. The gardens of the Palace of Catete are very inviting and offer the people of the area a pleasant place to relax. Many apartments and houses from the colonial era were demolished for new construction. The district used to be one of the noblest urban areas, but this has changed since the federal government moved from Rio to Brasília .

Palácio do Catete - Museu da República

The palace, originally Palácio Novo Friburgo, was built by Baron Nova Friburgo in the 1860s in neoclassical style as a city palace, bought by the Republic in 1896 and served various government agencies until they moved to Brasília. Since then it has been used as a historical museum.
