The Palácio do Catete is the former government palace of Brazil in the Flamengo district in Rio de Janeiro . Today it houses the Museu da República (Museum of the Republic) and a theater.

It was built by the German master builder Gustav Wähnelt as the home of the Luso-Brazilian coffee “ baron ” Antonio Clemente Pinto , Baron von Nova Friburgo . It was bought by the Brazilian government in 1896 and used as the seat of the president in what was then the capital, Rio de Janeiro. After Rio lost its function as the capital of the country to Brasília , the palace was rebuilt and reopened as Museu da República on November 15, 1960 by the then President Juscelino Kubitschek . The date was chosen deliberately, as this was the anniversary of the proclamation of the Republic of Brazil.

The museum owns about 20,000 books, 7,000 exhibits and 80,000 documents from the history of Brazil, as well as works of art, documents and furniture of the former President Getúlio Vargas .

The palace has an extensive garden, which today serves as a small public park . In April 1938 the city palace was entered in the list of cultural monuments under number 153.
