The district of Cidade de Deus

Cidade de Deus ( Portuguese for "City of God") is a settlement in the west of Rio de Janeiro , Brazil . It was founded in 1966 by the Guanabara government for the benefit of the elimination of favelas around the city center of Rio de Janeiro. Since July 23, 1981 it has been a district (administrative unit: Bairro) of the metropolis.

CDD, as it is sometimes called by the residents, was considered one of the most violent crime-hit places in Brazil. In 2009, the drug gangs ruling the neighborhood were driven out by massive police operations.

In 2002, Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund directed the film City of God , which tells the story of two young men from the settlement, based on the novel of the same name by Paulo Lins .

Origin of name

Under the name De civitate Dei ("On the State of God") Augustine wrote a text between 413 and 426 that reflects the tension between worldly power and religious claim; it is one of the most influential writings in the Christian world up to the early modern period.
