Teleférico do Alemão is a public cable car system that operates in the Complexo do Alemão district in the northern zone of the city of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil . As a means of public transport, it connects parts of the Favela Complexo do Alemão with the city, making it easier for the residents of the favela to get into the city. The cable car was inaugurated on July 7, 2011 by the then President of Brazil Dilma Rousseff and has been operated by the Consórcio Rio Teleféricos since March 7, 2016 . On October 14, 2016, she was decommissioned due to technical problems and the suspension of payments to the consortium by the city.

technology

The cable car system consists of a single line with six stations and 25 girders, it has a length of 3.5 km. The system consists of 152 gondolas with space for ten passengers each with eight seats and two standing places. The journey from the first (Bonsucesso) to the last station (Palmeiras) takes an average of 16 minutes. At the Bonsucesso station there is a connection to the trains of the SuperVia system. The cable car has a capacity of around 3,000 passengers per hour, with an average of 30,000 passengers per day. The construction of the cable car cost around R $ 253 million in 2011 .

Problems

On October 14, 2016, the cable car was shut down due to the wear and tear of one of the pull cables. According to the Secretaria Estadual de Transportes (Ministry of Transport), the imported spare parts have already been purchased. The exchange is the responsibility of the operator and the manufacturer. At the end of 2017, the cable car was not yet in operation again.

use

The cable car was built as part of the Programa de Aceleração do Crescimento (PAC) (Growth Acceleration Program) to give favela residents better access to the city and to open up the possibility of doing regular work to improve the situation in the favelas. If the cable car should be back in operation, this is not a place for tourists. Access to the favelas remains extremely dangerous. The facades of some stations today show numerous traces of exchanges of fire.
