SuperVia is the name of a Brazilian railway company which, as a consortium, received the license (25 years) on November 1, 1998 to operate passenger trains in the greater area of the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro . Today, Supervia transports around 9 million passengers a month, that is around 300,000 passengers a day. The routes have 89 stations that are spread across the metropolitan area of Rio de Janeiro . There are signs that this capacity will expand in the next few years. There are also areas in which buses are used.

history

Chinese Series 3000 SuperVia train

In 1994, the then state system of passenger trains in suburban traffic in Rio de Janeiro was transporting a million people a day. However, the system was poorly maintained and the private bus operators took over a large number of passengers in local transport. In this crisis situation there were a number of accidents (e.g. due to ailing rolling stock ) and the punctuality and reliability of the lines decreased more and more. As a result of the situation, in 1996 only 145,000 passengers per day used the means of transport on the suburban train lines. This was the absolute low point in public transport in Rio de Janeiro .

Through political measures, operations were transferred from the former CBTU to the state of Rio de Janeiro . Various investments, including funds from the World Bank , were made to rehabilitate the routes. In 1998, the operation of the lines was put out to tender for privatization and auctioned off to the SuperVia consortium for $ 280 million. Of this, 30 million were paid to the state and 250 million were invested in the route network. Since then, SuperVia has not received any government grants. The railway company carries itself.

The improvement of the traffic situation through the direct investments led to a strong increase in the number of passengers carried on all routes. The number of passengers doubled within two years. The suburban trains were thus once again of great importance in local traffic in the greater Rio de Janeiro area. Complaints from passengers today mainly concern the overcrowded trains at rush hour , the inflated fares and the regularly occurring delays.

By equipping the 223 km long network with ETCS Level 1 , the headway times should be halved to three minutes with the same safety. The contract was awarded to Bombardier in 2011 . The start of operations was planned to be staggered between November 2012 and July 2013. It is the first time ETCS has been deployed in South America .
