The Estação Central do Brasil , or Central do Brasil for short , is a train station in the center of the Brazilian metropolis of Rio de Janeiro .
The Estação do Campo of the Estrada de Ferro Central do Brasil railway company was originally built on the site in 1858 . After the station was officially called Estação da Corte in the meantime , it was named in 1898 after the then Emperor of Brazil Estação Dom Pedro II . In 1971 it was given its current official name by the national railway company Rede Ferroviária Federal , which owned the station after the end of Ferro Central do Brasil in 1969, although it was already widely used in common parlance before that.
The original station building has undergone numerous extensions over time and between 1936 and 1953 it was replaced by the current structure as part of further expansion and electrification of the network.
At its height, the station was of national importance and was, for example, the starting point of the important connection to São Paulo . After the passenger traffic on medium and long-haul routes in Brazil was practically discontinued by the 1980s, Central do Brasil now serves as the terminus and junction for suburban trains from Rio and belongs to its operating company SuperVia .
Central do Brasil achieved international fame through the film Central Station with the original title Central do Brasil , which was nominated for an Oscar in 1999 in two categories (best foreign language film and best leading actress) .
