history

Railway station of the Central do Brasil company in Rio de Janeiro in the 19th century

The railway company was in competition with the Estrada de Ferro Leopoldina , which was founded around the same time. The heart of the EFCB was the EFCB - Linha do Centro . It led from the Dom Pedro II train station in Rio de Janeiro up the Serra das Araras and was completed as far as the Barra do Piraí in 1864. From here the line continued towards Juiz de Fora (1875) and Minas Gerais. The plan was to continue the line past today's Belo Horizonte to the Rio São Francisco and then even further to Belém in the Pará province in Amazonia.

In fact, the track construction arrived in Pirapora on the Rio São Francisco in 1910 . However, the bridge over the river was little used after the Independencia train station opened on the other side of the river in 1922. A former siding of the Ramal de Montes-Claros became the end point in the last expansion stage of the railway line. The section that was to be led out across the river was not expanded. It was later called Ramal de Pirapora. In the last expansion stage in 1922, the EFCB - Linha do Centro was 1354 kilometers of rail. In 1938 the railway accident at João Ayres occurred on the route in which 42 people died.

From March 16, 1957, the entire organization of the EFCB came under the control of Rede Ferroviária Federal SA (RFFSA). As a result, the many suburban rail systems that belonged to the EFCB up to this point were split up. Above all, however, the unprofitable lines were closed or assigned to other lines. The EFCB - Linha do Centro was used in parts by the trains coming from São Paulo to Rio de Janeiro (from Barra do Piraí). But even this lucrative section became more and more unprofitable due to the construction of the DUTRA motorway, so that all passenger traffic was completely stopped in 1998. In the area of Rio de Janeiro, suburban trains still run on the rails of the former Linha do Centro of the EFCB.
