VFFLB - Linha da Bahia

The EFCB Linha do Centro is a railway line in Brazil that runs from Rio de Janeiro to the neighboring state of Minas Gerais . This line was the heart of the railway company Estrada de Ferro Central do Brasil , which was taken over from 1957 in the RFFSA Rede Ferroviária Federal SA.

history

The starting point of the railway line was the Dom Pedro II station in the center of Rio de Janeiro - from here it led through the Serra das Araras and was completed as far as the Barra do Piraí in 1864. Further stages of completion were:

  • Rio de Janeiro - Barra do Piraí (1864)
  • Barra do Piraí - Juiz de Fora (1875)
  • Juiz de Fora - Pedro Leopoldo near today's Belo Horizonte in Minas Gerais (1895)
  • Pedro Leopoldo - Pirapora on the Rio São Francisco (1910) later RAMAL DE PIRAPORA
  • Bridge over the Rio São Francisco and Independencia Station (1922)
  • Acquisition of the Ramal de Diamantina: Corinto - Diamantina (1923)
  • Completion of the Ramal de Montes Claros (1926) later the main line
  • Completion of the last expansion stage up to Monte Azul in Minas Gerais (1948)

The plan was to continue the line past today's Belo Horizonte to the Rio São Francisco and then even further to Belém in the Pará province in Amazonia.

In fact, the track construction arrived in Pirapora on the Rio São Francisco in 1910. However, the bridge over the river was little used after the Independencia train station opened on the other side of the river in 1922. A former siding of the Ramal de Montes-Claros became the end point in the last expansion stage of the railway line. The section that was to be led out across the river was not expanded. It was later called Ramal de Pirapora . In the last expansion stage in 1948 to Monte Azul, the EFCB - Linha do Centro was 1,354.2 kilometers of rail. Here the line had a connection to the route network of the railway company VFFLB - VF Leste Brasileiro , which maintained railway lines coming from São Paulo to Salvador da Bahia in the state of Bahia. The last passenger trains ran on the EFCB Linha do Centro routes between Montes Claros and Monte Azul Minas Gerais until 1996 and from Barra do Piraí to Rio de Janeiro as part of the passenger service between São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. This service was also completely discontinued in 1998, with the exception of a few purely tourist departures. Otherwise, the entire Linha Central is still used today for freight traffic. In the greater Rio de Janeiro area , suburban trains run on the rail lines.

Overview of the sidings and parallel lines

The EFCB Linha do Centro received a number of parallel routes over time:

  • Linha do Paraopeba in Minas Gerais from Congonhas do Campo to Carvalho de Brito
  • Linha do Carandaí in Minas Gerais by Dorival Brito after Ilídio
