history

Overview of the Linha Central railway line and branch lines of the EFCB

The Pirapora siding was completed in 1910 and was only intended as the main line of the EFCB - Linha do Centro railway line of the Estrada de Ferro Central do Brasil . As planned, the route now went to the banks of the Rio São Francisco . The construction of a bridge took another twelve years, but the continuation of the railway line on the other side of the river to Belém do Pará did not come about. Thus, this section of the route was renamed the Ramal de Pirapora when it was decided to continue the railway line to Monte Azul in the 1930s. From this time on, the railway bridge over the São Francisco with the Indepêndencia station on the opposite side was shut down again. Passenger traffic on the line was stopped in the 1970s. Officially, this railway line is not yet considered closed. Even the rails over the bridge of the Rio São Francisco are still in existence.
