history

Railway route overview of EF Central do Brasil

The Ramal de Mangaratiba (later also called Ramal de Angra ) was inaugurated in 1878 on the route from Sapopemba (Deodoro) to Santa Cruz . It was not until 1911, already under the Estrada de Ferro Central do Brasil railway company , that this route was continued to Itaguaí and in 1914 to Mangaratiba . From here the line was to be extended to Angra dos Reis, where the EF Oeste de Minas railway company had completed its line from Barra Mansa in 1928. This extension was never carried out. The railway line with wonderful sections near the sea was used by passenger trains until 1982, the year it was closed. Before that, the RFFSA railway company had built its own siding, which branched off from the EFCB - Linha do Centro near Japeri and was only used for freight traffic. As of 2007, according to the website estacoesferroviarias.com.br, only part of the railway line between Deodoro and Santa Cruz will be used by suburban trains. This connection is still very important in freight transport. There is a siding for the Container Terminal Sepetiba on the Ilha da Madeira. There is also an ore loading facility there. The branch for these two operations is at the level of the former Brisa Mar station near Itaguaí. Most of the remaining stretch to the Ilha Guaíba is still used today by freight trains (loaded with iron ore from Minas Gerais ) for the shipping port of Porto Guaíba located there. This entire freight network is operated by the logistics company MRS Logística . The remainder from Ibicuí to Mangaratiba was shut down on June 30, 1983 and the tracks have since been dismantled.

On November 18, 2017, a fatal accident occurred on the line in the local area of Muriqui when a man was hit by a passing freight train while crossing the tracks.
