history

Route network of CF Leopoldina

The Linha de Três Rios-Caratinga railway line was actually a combination of different lines of the Estrada de Ferro Leopoldina that were built in different eras.

  • The section between Três Rios and Silveira Lobo was opened in 1904.
  • The following section to the Guarani station was made by the company Cia. União Mineira was completed in 1883, and was later handed over to the Leopoldina in 1884.
  • The section from here to Ligação was completed in 1886, while the next sections to Ponte Nova were completed between 1879 and 1886.
  • Between 1912 and 1926, the rest of the line to Matipoó (Raul Soares) was completed
  • and finally, only in 1931 did trains run to Caratinga. In addition, this line was not expanded.

There was a daily train departure (from 1931) from the Barão de Mauá station in the center of Rio de Janeiro , which ran to Caratinga, via Petrópolis over the Linha do Norte. Passenger traffic was abandoned in the 1980s, and from 1994 the sections Três Rios-Ligação and Ponte Nova-Caratinga were abandoned under the management of the RFFSA . The remaining route is still interrupted today with the status "suspended traffic".
