The Linha do Norte is a railway line in Brazil that connected Rio de Janeiro with Petrópolis and Três Rios .

history

Meio da Serra train station around 1900
Route network of the CFLeopoldina

Linha do Norte was built by different societies in different eras.

A small part of this line was one of the oldest rail connections in Brazil and was constructed by the Baron von Mauá in 1854 . This route connected Porto de Mauá (Guia de Pacobaíba) with the Raiz da Serra station (Vila Inhomerim).

From here the extension to Petrópolis and Areal was made between 1883 and 1886.

Finally, the Areal station was connected to Três Rios in 1900 by the Estrada de Ferro Leopoldina company .

In 1926 the line was extended to Barão de Mauá (train station in the center of Rio de Janeiro ) and a connection between Vila Inhomerim and Três Rios was added in the mid-1960s.

Todays situation

Today the entire section between the center of Rio de Janeiro and Vila Inhomerim is used by suburban trains.
