The Linha de Cantagalo is a railway line in Brazil between Saracuruna and Porto das Caixas.

history

Steam locomotive at the Cachoeira de Macacu station around 1932

The route was planned in 1890 by the Estrada de Ferro Leopoldina company and only completed in 1926. This line practically connected the cities of Rio de Janeiro and Niterói by circling the Guanabara Bay. A connection piece for Teresópolis was also created at Magé. The line also crossed the old railway line of EF Mauá ( Ramal de Guia de Pacobaíba ) in Bongaba. The Saracuruna-Porto das Caixas route is still actively used today, as is parts of the Ramal de Teresópolis to Guapimirim. On the remainder of the route from Magé to Visconde de Itaboraí, only through freight trains run from Rio de Janeiro to Campos and Vitóra (Espirito Santo).

Inauguration of the Cantagallo Railway .

The Linha de Cantagalo of the Estrada de Ferro Leopoldina was built between 1860 and 1873. The railway line was built between Porto das Caixas and Macuco, as well as to the city of Friburgo. Analogous to the Linha do Norte, the track width was 1,676 m but was later reduced to 1,109 m and then to 1,000 m. Other sources say that from 1873 some Fell locomotives with a gauge of 1100 mm from Mont-Cenis were used here, which were replaced from 1883 by Baldwin locomotives, which only needed the central rail for braking. It remains unclear whether the Baldwin locomotives were already meter gauge. The extension to the station from Cordeiro to Portela along the banks of the Paraíba do Sul river was completed in small sections between 1876 and 1890. From 1890 the Leopoldina company operated this route and was called Linha de Cantagalo. The railway line was partially shut down between Cachoeira de Macacu and Portela in 1967 and the rest not until 1973.

According to a local source, the last train left Nova Friburgo on July 15, 1964.
