Urs Peschlow

Urs Peschlow (born March 11, 1943 in Hanover ; † March 16, 2018 in Wiesbaden ) was a German Christian archaeologist and Byzantine art historian .

Life

After attending the Leibniz School in Hanover, Urs Peschlow studied art history , classical archeology and Christian archeology at the universities of Marburg , Thessaloniki and Mainz from 1962 to 1970 . In 1970 he received his doctorate in Mainz with Richard Hamann-Mac Lean with a thesis on The Irish Church in Istanbul . This was followed in 1970/71 by a work contract at the Rome Department of the German Archaeological Institute , and in 1971 he became a consultant at the Istanbul Department of the German Archaeological Institute . 1975 to 1979 Peschlow was a fellow of the German Research Foundation in Istanbul, 1979/80 research fellow in Dumbarton Oaks . In 1981 he became a research assistant and in 1983 a university assistant at the University of Göttingen .

In 1985 he was offered a professorship at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and taught at the Institute for Art History at Mainz University until his retirement in 2008 and was a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute .

He was married to the classical archaeologist Anneliese Peschlow .
