The Linha do Litoral is a railway line in Brazil .

history

Historical map of the location of the General Dutra station in Niterói, RJ

The railway line was built by various railway companies and only later merged under the roof of the Estrada de Ferro Leopoldina . The first section from Niterói (RJ) to Rio Bonito was built between 1874 and 1880 by the Cia. Ferro-Carril Niteroiense, after it was built in 1871 by the company Cia. EF Macaé a Campos planned but was rejected again. It was not until 1887 that the Leopoldina bought the section. The connection from Macaé to Campos was built between 1874 and 1875. The following stretch of route from Campos to Cachoeiro do Itapemirim in the province of Espírito Santo was built by the company EF Carangola between 1877 and 1878 and in 1890 this company was bought by the company EF Barão de Araruama, which was then sold to the Leopoldina.

The last section to Vitória was bought by the company EF Sul do Espírito Santo and only sold to the Leopoldina in 1907. This year, the Leopoldina built a bridge over the Rio Paraíba do Sul in Campos , which merged the two parts of the route in the north and south of the river. The line has been operated in freight transport since 1996 by the company FCA Ferrovia Centro Atlântica . Passenger traffic was stopped in the 1980s.
