Casimiro de Abreu , actually José Marques Casimiro de Abreu (born January 4, 1839 on the Fazenda Indaicu, Barra de São João, today Cidade de Casimiro de Abreu , State of Rio de Janeiro , Brazil ; † October 18, 1860 in Nova Friburgo ), was a Brazilian lyric poet who is considered one of the most important romantics in his country.

Life

Casimiro de Abreu was born on a farm as a descendant of immigrant Portuguese. His father was a wealthy trader. He studied trade first in Nova Friburgo and later in Lisbon , Portugal , where he lived between 1853 and 1857. After his stay in Portugal he returned to Brazil and lived in Rio de Janeiro as a bohemian , where he published occasionally in various newspapers.

His first and only book " As primaveras ", a collection of his poetry, was published in 1859.

Casimiro de Abreu died in 1860 at the age of 21 of complications from tuberculosis . His belongings were burned.

He is considered an important representative of Brazilian Saudosism in literature and one of the greatest literary romantics in his country.

Honors

The city of Casimiro de Abreu with 22,000 inhabitants in the state of Rio de Janeiro was named after him in 1938 (it was previously called Barra de Sao Joao). The house where he was born was completely renovated in 1974 and is now a cultural center.
