Speech Ferroviária Federal
The Rede Ferroviária Federal Sociedade Anônima ( RFFSA ) was a Brazilian state railway company . It served both passenger and freight traffic.
history
The Rede Ferroviária Federal Sociedade Anônima was founded in 1957 from 42 individual companies (some of which only existed on paper). The foundation of the RFFSA is based on the Brazilian Law No. 3.115, Article 7. There, the tasks of the society were defined and updated again with Law No. 6.171 of 1974.
The aim of the establishment was to promote rail traffic in Brazil and to create an overarching route network in all five regions of Brazil. This goal was not achieved as only four of the five regions were served. For example, [Ferrovia Paulista SA] (FEPASA) in the state of São Paulo was not integrated into the RFFSA until 1998 - at a time when the privatization of the RFFSA was already in full swing.
In the 1980s and 1990s, the need for investment in the Brazilian state railway was not met, so that there was a considerable investment backlog in the mid-1990s. This was a reason for the privatization of the RFFSA.
Between 1996 and 1998, over 22,000 km of railway lines (73% of the total Brazilian state railway line) were privatized. With the purchase, the private buyers signed a concession to operate the railway system for a period of 30 years. With the privatization, an investment of 2.1 billion US dollars was intended to modernize and expand the railway. After this privatization phase, the RFFSA was liquidated beginning with the resolution of the shareholders on December 17, 1999. This process was completed on May 31, 2007 and enshrined in Law No. 11,485.
