The EFCB - Linha Auxiliar is a partly historic railway line in the states of Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais in Brazil. It was operated by the Estrada de Ferro Central do Brasil (EFCB) railway company.

history

Overall network of the EFCB
Rail network of the Leopoldina

The EFCB - Linha Auxiliar was originally constructed from 1892 to 1898 by the railway company E. F. Melhoramentos to Entre Rios (Três Rios).

In 1903, EF Melhoramentos was affiliated to the Estrada de Ferro Central do Brasil (EFCB) and from that moment on was called Linha Auxiliar (auxiliary line).

From 1950 the railway line only went to Três Rios and the connection to Porto Novo was transferred to the operation of the Estrada de Ferro Leopoldina .

Today the route is part of the broad gauge network of MRS Logística .

course

The railway line ran from the Alfredo Maia station in the center of Rio de Janeiro to Porto Novo in the valley of the Paraíba do Sul in the state of Minas Gerais with a direct connection to the Linha do Centro of the Estrada de Ferro Leopoldina railway company .

The EFCB - Linha Auxiliar relieved the somewhat more southerly located EFCB - Linha do Centro , which led from Rio de Janeiro to the central Minas Gerais up to the Rio São Francisco .

Todays situation

Today mainly suburban trains run on the sections near the city of Rio de Janeiro .

The line between Amaral and Três Rios was closed in 1996. The rest is used today either in suburban traffic from Rio or the MRS Logística as an alternative route (Japeri-Arará) in freight transport.
