Sérgio Cabral Filho (born January 27, 1963 in Rio de Janeiro ) is a Brazilian journalist and politician of the Partido do Movimento Democrático Brasileiro (PMDB). He was governor of the state of Rio de Janeiro from 2007 to 2014 .

Life

He is the son of the journalist Sérgio Cabral and also a journalist trained at the Centro Universitário da Cidade do Rio de Janeiro .

He joined the youth organization of the recently founded Partido do Movimento Democrático Brasileiro (PMDB) in the early 1980s . In 1982 he supported the career of his father, Sergio Cabral, in the elections for the Rio City Council. As early as 1984 he was the coordinator of the Pedro Ernesto committee in support of Tancredo Neves . He entered public life in March 1987 when he became Operations Manager ( Diretoria de Operações ) of TurisRio , the tourism company of the state of Rio de Janeiro under the government of Moreira Franco .

He was elected deputy in the state parliamentary elections in 1990, 1994 and 1998. In 2002 he reached the post of Senator of the State of Rio de Janeiro in the Senate elections. Twice, in 1992 and 1996, he ran unsuccessfully for the PMDB for governor of the state of Rio de Janeiro. In the elections of 2000 he supported the candidate of the Partido da Frente Liberal (PFL), Luiz Paulo Conde , to whom he was defeated in the previous election in 1996 in the second round.

On October 29, 2006 he was elected Governor of Rio de Janeiro in the second ballot with the support of his predecessors Anthony Garotinho and Rosinha Garotinho . He received 68% of the vote against 32% of his opponent Denise Frossard from the Partido Popular Socialista (PPS). The inauguration took place on January 1, 2007.

In October 2010, he was re-elected as governor in the first ballot with more than 66% of the valid votes. In April 2014, he was succeeded as governor by the politician Luiz Fernando Pezão .

On November 16, 2016, he was arrested on charges of corruption. After an interim balance from July 3, 2018 and the sixth corruption proceedings against him for passive bribery, money laundering and the formation of a criminal organization, he has so far been sentenced to a total sentence of 122 years and 8 months. His wife, Adriana Ancelmo , the state's former first lady, was sentenced to 18 years in prison. They are both serving their sentences in the Gericinó prison complex .
