Luiz Fernando de Souza , called Luiz Fernando Pezão or just Pezão (born March 29, 1955 in Piraí ), is a Brazilian politician of the Partido do Movimento Democrático Brasileiro and former governor of the state of Rio de Janeiro .

Life

Pezão studied economics and administrative sciences and became a councilor in the middle town of Piraí in 1982 . Later he was elected prefect of town (mayor) of Piraí for two terms from 1997 to 2000 with 75% and from 2001 to 2004 with 86% of the votes. During this time he initiated the award-winning project Piraí digital (The digitized city).

He became active in national politics from 2006, first as secretary of the then governor Sérgio Cabral Filho , then as his vice-governor. During this time, he worked with Eduardo Paes , the mayor of Rio de Janeiro , to successfully apply for the city to host the 2016 Summer Olympics .

In a runoff election, he won the 2014 election in Brazil with 4,343,298 (55.78%) of the valid votes over Senator Marcelo Crivella of the Partido Republicano Brasileiro (PRB). Since April 4, 2014 he has succeeded Sérgio Cabral as governor of the state of Rio de Janeiro.

In 2015 he got involved in the investigation of Operation Lava Jato because of an incriminating testimony by Paulo Roberto Costa , former director of the Petrobras group .

On February 8, 2017, the regional electoral court of Rio de Janeiro overturned the term of office of Pezão and his deputy Francisco Dornelles by three to two votes for abuse of economic and political power, which would result in an eight-year ban. Electoral judge Marco Couto , a member of the court, said in his reasoning that it had been proven that administration contracts worth millions were concluded in return for campaign donations. In addition, the regional electoral prosecutor of the TRE-RJ in Rio de Janeiro stated that around 10 million reais flowed into the governor's 2014 campaign . The effects of the cassation decision were suspended until a possible appeal to the Supreme Electoral Court was pending. On August 28, 2018, the Tribunal Superior Eleitoral (TSE) overturned the decision of the TRE-RJ because it was of the opinion that the required quorum of seven judges stipulated in the electoral law had not been observed and the electoral court in Rio de Janeiro the entire Must reassess judgment.

Pezão is married to the lawyer Maria Lúcia Jardim. In 2016 he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma .
