Political career

From February 1, 2003 to January 1, 2017 in the 52nd to 55th legislative terms, Crivella served as one of three senators for his home state in the Senate of Brazil . From March 2, 2012 to March 17, 2014, Crivella was the successor to Nóbrega de Oliveira, Minister for Fisheries and Pisciculture ( Ministro da Pesca e Aquicultura ) in Brazil in the Rousseff I cabinet . He was succeeded as Minister of Fisheries by Eduardo Lopes .

In Rio de Janeiro, Crivella is controversial due to controversial statements and his negative attitude towards the local carnival , which he describes as "unchristian excess". By 2020 he cut all state support to the organizers. When it came to flooding in Rio de Janeiro after heavy rains, he blamed the residents of the city themselves, because they had "disposed of garbage on the river banks".

Worldview

Crivella advocates an evangelical fundamentalist interpretation of the Bible, which was initially characterized by extreme religious intolerance. In his book Evangelizing Africa , he describes homosexuality as a "terrible evil" and Catholics as demonic. He also claimed that traditional African religions worship "evil spirits" and that Hindus drink child blood. Later, however, he distanced himself from the statements in this book, which he describes as the work of a young, immature missionary . Crivella is an anti-abortionist and a creationist .
