Eduardo Paes ( eˈdwaʁdu dɐ ˈkɔstɐ pɐjs , born November 14, 1969 in Rio de Janeiro ) is a Brazilian politician. He was mayor of his hometown from January 1, 2009 to December 31, 2016.

Life

Paes studied law at the Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro and was deputy mayor of the Barra da Tijuca district at the age of 23 . He was a member of various political parties and has been a member of the Partido do Movimento Democrático Brasileiro (PMDB) since 2007 . From 1997 to 1999 he was a city councilor in Rio, after which he was a member of the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies in his home country for two legislative terms. He became Minister of Tourism in the state of Rio.

Paes took over the post of mayor in Rio from Fernando Gabeira , whom he defeated in the 2008 local elections .

His term of office was determined by the preparation for the 2016 Olympics : in 2009 the decision was made for Rio and on August 12, 2012, he took over the Olympic flag from IOC President Jacques Rogge . His term of office expired in 2017 for electoral reasons. Marcelo Crivella ( PRB ) became his successor on January 1, 2017 .

Paes is Chairman of the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group within the Global Commission on the Economy and Climate of The New Global Climate Economy .
