history

Western ramp, stairs to the terrace

The construction of the Cidade das Artes began in 2003, and the building should be inaugurated at the end of 2004. The estimated cost should be around R $ 80 million . At the beginning the building should be called Cidade da Música (City of Music). After around 10 years of construction, the building was finally opened on January 3, 2013 with the musical Rock in Rio - the musical . The construction costs amounted to about 508 million R $. Even on the day it opened, the building was only 95 percent complete.

The building was criticized by the public for a long time, as the opening from December 26, 2008, which had already been postponed several times, was finally postponed to January 3, 2013 and the expenditure exceeded the planned framework by more than a factor of 6. Furthermore, the planned location was a point of criticism, as there should be a subway station nearby. The nearby Alvorada terminal only has city bus and Transcarioca - Bus Rapid Transit connections. The closest metro station is currently Jardim Oceânico , from which the BRT bus goes to Alvorada.

building

The Cidade das Artes is a reinforced concrete structure. Two large horizontal concrete slabs form the ground floor and the roof. Two ramps and a few stairs lead to the terrace. This is interspersed with a multitude of raised spaces and large curved fins leading downwards. According to the architect, the ten meter high public terrace of the Cidade das Artes is a construction on which a small town with numerous different buildings is housed. Access to all facilities of the Cidade das Artes is possible from the terrace.
