Australia participated in the 2016 Summer Olympics in the Brazilian metropolis of Rio de Janeiro with 421athletes nominatedby the Australian Olympic Committee in 29 sports.

Since 1896 it was Australia's 28th participation in the Summer Olympics . This made Australia, along with Greece , France , Switzerland and the United Kingdom, one of the five nations that had previously participated in all the Summer Olympics.

Flag bearer

The cyclist Anna Meares carried the flag of Australia during the opening ceremony at the Maracanã Stadium ; At the closing ceremony it was worn by the rower Kim Brennan .
