Matthew Denny (born June 2, 1996 in Toowoomba ) is an Australian athlete who competes in both discus and hammer throw .

Athletic career

Matthew Denny gained his first international experience at the 2013 World Youth Championships in Donetsk , where he won the gold medal in the discus throw with 67.54 m and secured bronze in the hammer throw with 78.67 m. In 2014 he finished fourth with the discus at the Junior World Championships in Eugene with 62.73 m and was eliminated from the qualification with a hammer throw with 69.16 m. With the discus he took part in the 2015 Summer Universiade in Gwangju , South Korea , where he won the silver medal behind the Belgian Philip Milanov with 62.58 m . In 2016 Denny qualified for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , where he was eliminated with 61.16 m in the discus qualification . In 2018 he took part for the first time in the Commonwealth Games in the Australian Goald Coast , where he finished fourth in the discus throw with 62.53 m and won the silver medal behind Brit Nick Miller with the hammer with 74.88 m .

Denny has been concentrating exclusively on the discus throw since 2019 and took part in the Summer Universiade in Naples again, winning there with a width of 65.27 m. He qualified for the World Championships at the end of September in Doha , where he finished sixth with 65.43 m in the final .

Between 2015 and 2018, Denny was the Australian hammer throw champion every year as well as discus throwing in 2016, 2018 and 2019 . He is a student at Griffith University in Brisbane .
