Rüstm Fəzail oğlu Orucov or Rustam Orujov (born October 4, 1991 in Ust-Ilimsk , Russian SFSR ) is an Azerbaijani judoka . Since 2011 he competes in the lightweight (up to 73 kg). In 2016 he won the Olympic silver medal.

Athletic career

After fighting in the junior division in the lower weight classes, he finished third in the lightweight division at the 2011 World Cup tournament in Baku. In London, Orujev retired from Russia at the 2012 Olympic Games after his third-round defeat against the eventual Olympic champion Mansur Issajew . At the Judo European Championships in Montpellier in 2014 , he reached fifth place after defeats against the future Dutch European champion Dex Elmont and the Slovenian Rok Drakšič . Four months later, he finished seventh at the 2014 World Judo Championships in Chelyabinsk, after defeating Dex Elmont but losing to eventual world champion Riki Nakaya in the quarter-finals .

Orujov won his first medal at international championships at the European Judo Championships in Kazan in 2016 when he defeated Georgian Lascha Shawdatuashvili in the final. With the Azerbaijani team he received the bronze medal. At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , Orujov defeated the Israeli Sagi Muki in the semi-finals . In the fight for the gold medal he was defeated by the Japanese Shōhei Ōno .

At the 2017 European Championships in Warsaw, he lost to the Russian Musa Moguschkow in the quarter-finals , while Orujev won the battle for the bronze medal against the Hungarian Miklós Ungvári . Four months later he defeated the South Korean An Chang-rim in the semi-finals of the World Championships in Budapest , and the Japanese Soichi Hashimoto won the final . After a weaker year in 2018, Orujov reached the final of the European Championships held in Minsk as part of the 2019 European Games , where he was defeated by the Swede Tommy Macias . At the 2019 World Championships in Tokyo he defeated his compatriot Hidayət Heydərov in the semifinals , and in the final he lost to Shōhei Ōno.
