Rok Drakšič (born January 2, 1987 in Žalec ) is a former judoka who competed in three different weight classes for Slovenia in the Olympic Games. In 2013 he was European lightweight champion, and he also won five bronze medals at European championships.

Athletic career

Rok Drakšič took third place at the European Cadet Championships in 2002 in the weight class up to 55 kilograms. In 2004 he was second in the weight class up to 60 kilograms at the Junior European Championships. Two months later he was third in the U23 European Championships. In June 2005 he won his first Slovenian championship title. At the Mediterranean Games in Almeria in 2005 he reached the final, but lost to the Algerian Omar Rebahi . Three months later he won another silver medal at the European Junior Championships. In 2006 he won the World Cup tournament in Moscow and won bronze at the Junior World Championships. In 2007 he finished seventh at the European Championships in Belgrade . Almost six months later, the 2007 World Championships took place in Rio de Janeiro . Rok Drakšič defeated the Austrian Ludwig Paischer in the quarter-finals and lost in the semi-finals to the Dutch Ruben Houkes . In the battle for a bronze medal, he was defeated by the South Korean Choi Min-ho and thus finished fifth. At the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008 Drakšič lost to the Iranian Masoud Haji Akhondzadeh in his opening fight .

After the Olympic Games, the 1.66 m tall Rok Drakšič also moved internationally to the weight class up to 66 kilograms, in which he had previously competed in national tournaments. At the Mediterranean Games in Pescara in 2009 he won a bronze medal and in November 2009 he won the U23 European Championships. In April 2010 at the European Championships in Vienna he was defeated in the semi-finals to the Hungarian Miklós Ungvári , the fight for a bronze medal he won against the French Loïc Korval . In 2011 he won the European Police Championships. At the 2011 World Championships in Paris he defeated the French David Larose in the quarter-finals and lost in the semi-finals to the Brazilian Leandro Cunha , and Drakšič lost the battle for bronze to the South Korean Cho Jun-ho . At the European Championships in 2012 in Chelyabinsk he lost in the quarter-finals to Tomasz Kowalski from Poland , in the round of hope he defeated the Georgian Shalva Kardava and then won a bronze medal with his victory over Miklós Ungvári. In the round of 16 of the Olympic Games in London Drakšič was eliminated against Ungvári. In September 2012 he won the police world championships.

Even after the Olympic Games in 2012, Rok Drakšič rose to a weight class and now fought in the lightweight up to 73 kilograms. At the 2013 European Championships in Budapest he defeated the Russian Musa Moguschkow in the quarter -finals, the French Pierre Duprat in the semifinals and the Georgian Nugsar Tatalashvili in the final . At the World Championships in Rio de Janeiro, he was defeated by the Belgian Dirk Van Tichelt as the reigning European champion in the quarter-finals, and after his defeat in the round of hope against the Dutchman Dex Elmont, he finished seventh. In early 2014 he reached the final of the Grand Slam in Paris and was defeated by the South Korean Bang Gui-man . Two and a half months later he was defeated in the semifinals of the European Championships in Montpelier to the French Ugo Legrand , the battle for bronze was won by Drakšič against Armor Orucov from Azerbaijan. In June 2015, the European Championships took place as part of the European Games 2015 in Baku. In the quarter-finals, Rok Drakšič was defeated by Georgian Nugsar Tatalaschwili, after a victory in the round of hope over the Montenegrin Nikola Gušić , the Slovenian also won the battle for bronze against the Russian Denis Jarzew . Rok Drakšič won his fifth bronze medal at the European Championships in Kazan in 2016 . After a quarter-final defeat by Rüstm Orucov, he defeated the Dutchman Sam van 't Westende and his compatriot Martin Hojak . At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, he retired in his opening match against the Israeli Sagi Muki after 2:16 minutes. After finishing fifth at the Grand Prix tournament in Antalya in April 2017, Rok Drakšič no longer took part in international tournaments.

Slovenian championship title

In the adult division, Rok Drakšič won seven Slovenian championship titles.

  • Super light weight up to 60 kilograms: 2005
  • Half-light weight up to 66 kilograms: 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011
  • Lightweight up to 73 kilograms: 2014, 2015
