Denis Nikolajewitsch Jarzew ( Russian Денис Николаевич Ярцев ; born September 18, 1990 in Chelyabinsk ) is a Russian judoka . He was third in the lightweight at the 2019 World Championships.

Career

The 1.76 m tall Denis Jarzew has been fighting in the lightweight, the weight class up to 73 kilograms , since 2010 . He won a bronze medal at the U23 European Championships in 2010. In 2011 he won the Universiade in Shenzhen and again won bronze at the U23 European Championships. In 2014 he won the Grand Slam tournament in Tyumen when he defeated the Brazilian Marcelo Contini in the final . At the European Championships held as part of the 2015 European Games in Baku , he reached the semi-finals with a victory over the Hungarian Miklós Ungvári . There he was defeated by the Israeli Sagi Muki , and he lost the battle for bronze to the SlovenianRok Drakšič . At the beginning of 2016, Jarzew reached the final at the Grand Slam tournament in Paris , but was defeated by the South Korean An Chang-rim . At the 2016 European Championships in Kazan, he lost to Rustam Orujov from Azerbaijan in the semi-finals and Nugzar Tatalashvili from Georgia in the battle for bronze . At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, he defeated the French Pierre Duprat with a punishment and the Chinese Sai Yinjirigala with Ippon after 1:48 minutes. In the quarterfinals he was defeated by the Belgian Dirk Van Tichelt by Waza-ari and in the round of hope he lost to the Georgian Lascha Schawdatuaschwili by a small score (Yuko).

As in the 2016 Olympic Games, Jarzew also took seventh place at the European Championships and the 2017 World Championships . In 2019, as in 2015, the European Championships as part of the 2019 European Games were held in Minsk. In the individual competition, Jarzew took seventh place once again. He was part of the team that won the team title, but was not used in the final. At the 2019 World Championships in Tokyo, Jarzew defeated Somon Makhmadbekov from Tajikistan in the quarter-finals . After his semi-final defeat against the Japanese Shōhei Ōno , he won the battle for a bronze medal against Behruzi Khojazoda, who was also playing for Tajikistan .
