Tommy Macias

Tommy Macias (born January 20, 1993 in Boo ) is a Swedish judoka . He was European champion in 2019.

Athletic career

Macias won Swedish titles in his respective age group from 2009. In 2013 he won his first Swedish championship title in the lightweight adult class , the weight class up to 73 kilograms. The following year he won his second national championship title and also won the Nordic championships. In 2015, he was eliminated from the European Championships held as part of the European Games in Baku in his first fight against the Serb Ljubiša Kovačević . His most important victory to date was achieved in October 2016 when he defeated Rustam Orujov from Azerbaijan in the final of the Grand Slam tournament in Abu Dhabi .

At the European Championships 2017 in Warsaw he was defeated in the quarterfinals by Hidayət Heydərov from Azerbaijan. Macias fought his way to the bronze medal with victories over the Austrian Lukas Reiter and the Israeli Tohar Butbul . Shortly afterwards he won his third Swedish championship title. At the European Championships in Tel Aviv in 2018, Macias lost to the Armenian Ferdinand Karapetjan in the semi-finals , and with a victory over the second Armenian Arsen Ghazaryan, the Swede won a bronze medal. In June 2018 Macias was Swedish champion for the fourth time. In September 2018 Macias took part in the Judo World Championships for the fourth time. At the World Championships in Baku he won a world championship fight against Tohar Butbul for the first time, but was eliminated in the second round against the Iranian Mohammad Mohammadi . In March 2019 Macias won the Grand Slam tournament in Saint Petersburg, where he defeated the Italian Fabio Basile in the final. The 2019 European Championships were held as part of the European Games in Minsk. Macias defeated Tohar Bulbut in the quarterfinals and the Georgian Lascha Schawdatuaschwili in the semifinals . In the final he met Rustam Orujov and won the title.
