Ferdinand Karapetjan

Ferdinand Karapetjan (born December 19, 1992 ) is an Armenian judoka who competed for Russia until 2014 . He was European champion in 2018.

Career

Ferdinand Karapetjan competed in the half-light weight category until 2016, the weight class up to 66 kilograms. In 2014 he was third in the Russian U23 championships and finished second in the Russian championships behind Denis Lavrentiev . In 2015 he finished seventh at the Grand Prix tournament in Tashkent, now starting for Armenia. In 2016 he was third at the tournament in Samsun.

In 2017 Karapetjan switched to lightweight, the weight class up to 73 kilograms. At the 2017 European Championships in Warsaw, he was eliminated in the round of 16 against Rustam Orujov from Azerbaijan. After finishing third at the World Cup tournament in Minsk, he was eliminated early at the 2017 World Championships in Budapest against Israeli Tohar Butbul .

In 2018 he finished third at the Grand Slam tournament in Düsseldorf. At the Grand Slam tournament in Yekaterinburg he reached the final and took second place behind the Mongolian Tsogtbaatar Tsend-Ochir . At the European Championships in Tel Aviv in 2018 , Karapetjan won the semi-finals against the Swede Tommy Macias and in the final against Hidayət Heydərov from Azerbaijan, making him European champion. The Armenians did not take part in the 2018 World Championships in Baku.
