history

Ust-Ilimsk hydropower plant

A first wooden fortress (Ostrog) on the site of today's town was built in the 1660s. The establishment of the place Ust-Ilimsk did not take place until the mid-1960s, when a hydropower plant and the Ust-Ilimsk reservoir on the Angara were built in this area . In 1966 Ust-Ilimsk was founded as a workers' settlement on the power plant construction site. This name is derived from Ust - Russian for "mouth" - and Ilim , the Yakut hydronym of the Angara tributary flowing by. The name of the city means "located at the mouth of the Ilim ". When the Angara was dammed in the course of the construction of the power station, the old wooden fortress was moved to the Talzy open - air museum .

On December 27, 1973 Ust-Ilimsk received city rights. The construction of the hydropower plant was completed in 1980.
