Praat ( Dutch the speech , the spoken ) is free software for phonetic analysis based on signals. Praat is developed by Paul Boersma and David Weenink at the Institute of Phonetic Sciences at the University of Amsterdam . Praat is known for its versatile and modern analysis methods and has established itself as a quasi standard in the field of language and communication sciences. Praat is constantly being expanded and improved, with 10 to 20 program versions per year not being uncommon.

Praat offers a large number of options, especially for script-based editing, whereby your own scripts can be integrated relatively easily into the graphical user interface. A simple experiment creation and recording of results are just as possible as the vector-based graphic representation of results. In addition to a very intuitive and clear usability, the display of spectrograms and the great variety of functions (grows from the open source concept, hence the regular and numerous updates), the free usability speaks for Praat. Disadvantages of Praat are, among other things, that only one file can be read in at a time, long sound files can only be edited to a limited extent, as can stereo files. There is a clear online manual and a lively user group (see web links).

Praat is available for Windows , macOS and Linux . In Debian systems, Praat can be obtained from the package manager.
