Markowa ( Russian Ма́ркова ) is an urban-type settlement in the Irkutsk Oblast in Russia with 9,894 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

The place is located in Irkutski Rajon and is a suburb of the Oblast and Rajon administrative center Irkutsk , about 10 km as the crow flies southwest of the city center on the left bank of the Kaja, a small right tributary of the Irkut .

Markova is home to the "municipal entity" Markowskoje munizipalnoje obrasowanije with the status of a municipality (gorodskoje posselenije), which also includes the village Nowogrudinina and the settlement pad Melnitschnaja include (corresponding to 16 and 13 km south-east on the left bank of the Irkutsk reservoir of the Angara ).

history

The place was founded in 1793 and possibly named after an exiled Pole named Mark Sawinski as the first settler. From the 1950s onwards, larger farms emerged in the village, primarily to supply the nearby city ​​of Irkutsk, and on September 10, 1984 Markowa received the status of an urban-type settlement. As a result, the settlement also developed into a residential suburb of Irkutsk.

A road leads to Markowa from the federal trunk road R258 , which passes by about 5 km to the north-west and leads from Irkutsk via Ulan-Ude to Chita and is part of the transcontinental road connection. The trunk road is followed by the Trans-Siberian Railway , with Smolenschtschina as the nearest stop .
