Jerbogatschon is the administrative center of Katangski Rajon and the seat of the rural municipality of Jerbogatschonskoje selskoje posselenije, which also includes the villages of Chamakar (80 km north), Nakanno (180 km north), Oskino (50 km south) and Teteja (80 km south-west) as well as the section ( utschastok) Inarigda (a good 200 km north) belong (all also on the Lower Tunguska, except Teteja on the left tributary of the same name).

history

The village was founded in 1786 by Russian fur hunters not far from an Evenk settlement. The name - the original name was Nerbeketschen ( Нэрбэкэчэн ) - goes back to Evenk nerbeke for a " hill overgrown with pine trees".

From 1925 the village belonged to the Preobrazhensky rajon with its seat in the 140 km upstream (south) village of Preobraschenka , until it became part of the Kirenski rajon with its seat in Kirensk an der Lena in 1929. On December 10, 1930, Jerbogatschon became the administrative seat of the newly formed Evenki National Rajon Katanga (Russian Katangski nazionalny (Evenkijski) rajon, after the name Katanga for the upper reaches of the Stony Tunguska in the western part of the area). Before 1940, the Rajon lost the status of a National Rajon and has been named since then.
