Course of the Lower Tunguska ( Nizhnyaya Tunguska )

The Lower Tunguska ( Russian: Нижняя Тунгуска , Nizhnyaja Tunguska ; scientific transliteration Nižnjaja Tunguska ) is a 2989 km long right or southeast tributary of the Yenisei in Siberia ( Russia , Asia ).

Geographical location

The Lower Tunguska rises in the southern part of the Central Siberian Mountains just under 300 km northeast of Bratsk between about 678  m high mountains. From its source at an altitude of around 550  m , it initially flows northeast through the aforementioned mountainous region and runs parallel to the Lena - a few kilometers away from it. While the Lena flows to the northeast, the Lower Tunguska runs to the north and then to the northwest, to flow into the Yenisei around 340 km south of Norilsk near Turukhansk at a height of around 5.5  m .

Catchment area and tributaries

The catchment area of the Lower Tunguska , which is mainly located in the large Tunguska region , covers approximately 473,000 km². Its largest tributary is the Kochetschum , which flows in from the north at Tura . Its other tributaries include Nepa and Ilimpeja .

Turukhansk hydropower plant

The Turukhansk hydropower plant with a 9400 km² and 45 km³ reservoir and a 200 m high dam is being planned for a location about 120 km above the mouth of the Lower Tunguska in the Yenisei .

Other rivers called Tunguska

About 100 km further north of the headwaters of the Lower Tunguska rises the shorter Stony Tunguska , which mainly flows northwestward and flows 600 km further south into the Yenisei. In addition, the Angara lower course is called Upper Tunguska .
