history
In the first half of the 17th century, former residents of Mangaseya settled in Turukhansk , who had left this place as a result of multiple fires. Because of this fact, Turukhansk was known as New Mangaseya (Novaya Mangaseya) for many years . From the second half of the 17th century to the end of the 18th century, Turukhansk benefited from the abundance of fur animals. The annual Turukhansk market attracted traders not only from Siberia , but also from the European part of Russia. In 1782 it received city rights. From the beginning of the 19th century, Turukhansk lost its importance and in 1897 only had about 200 inhabitants. In 1917 Turukhansk's city rights were revoked.
The place became famous through the exile of Josef Stalin . He was arrested in Saint Petersburg in February 1913 and sentenced to four years' exile in Turukhansk.
