List of cities in Russia |
Dudinka ( Russian Дудинка ) is a city with an artificially free, ice-free port in the north of the West Siberian lowlands , in the north of the Krasnoyarsk region , Siberia and Russia ( Asia ). It has 22,175 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
Until its dissolution, the city was the administrative center of the Taimyr Autonomous County in Northern Siberia . It was founded in 1667 as a winter settlement on the Yenisei and received town charter in 1951. The town is named in honor of the fur trader Dudin, who built the first log cabin here in the 17th century.
Geographical location
Dudinka is located around 300 km north of the Arctic Circle in the northeast part of the West Siberian lowlands. It is located to the northwest of the Lontokoiski-Kamen Mountains (max. 760 m ), the outer northwest foothills of the Central Siberian Mountains at the confluence of the Dudinka , which comes from the south-east, into the Yenisei . About the lower reaches of the Yenisei, one of the longest rivers in the world, is the link with the Arctic Ocean located Northeast Passage . A little northeast of the city, the West Siberian Lowland merges seamlessly into the North Siberian Lowland . The industrial city of Norilsk is located about 100 km east of Dudinka .
Traffic and entry restrictions
The city has a seaport on the banks of the Yenisei , which connects the industrial center of Norilsk to the east with the Northeast Passage . Today Dudinka can only be entered by foreigners with a special permit. The number of closed cities has been greatly reduced since the mid-1990s, but since 2001 travel for foreigners to the cities of Norilsk and Dudinka and the formerly independent cities of Talnach and Kajerkan , which have been incorporated into Norilsk since 2004, have been restricted again.
economy
The port of Dudinka belongs to the Norilsk Nickel company and is both sea and river port. The port is located on the right bank of the Yenisei and 350 km from the confluence with the Yenisei Gulf. In the port there are two canals that are separated by the island of Kabatskim. One is navigable with a depth of 12 to 33 m and a width of up to 2 km, the other is not navigable with a depth of between two and ten meters. The port is connected to Norilsk by the A-382 road and the Norilsk Railway .
Since 1978 ships to Dudinka have been made possible all year round with icebreakers. Only in June there is no boat trip, as the ice melt causes the river to rise approx. 15 m. All port facilities are then flooded. All port cranes are dismantled beforehand and stored at a safe distance for this period (see photo).
Around 4.5 million tons of goods, mainly metals, are handled in Dudinka and shipped to Murmansk .
Buildings
About 20 kilometers southeast of Dudinka was a 462 meter high transmission mast that was built for the Chaika radio navigation system. It represented a grounded steel framework construction with a triangular cross-section, equipped with a fish trap antenna. On September 24, 2009 the dilapidated transmission mast was blown up.
