List of cities in Russia |
Zheleznogorsk ( Russian Железногорск ; to 1994 Krasnoyarsk-26 ) is a closed town with 84,795 inhabitants (14 October 2010) in Russia . It is located in the Krasnoyarsk Region in the Siberian Federal District , about 60 km northeast of the regional capital Krasnoyarsk not far from the Yenisei River . The nearest town is Sosnovoborsk , 16 km southwest of Zheleznogorsk. Other places belonging to the urban district are Podgorny , Nowy Put, Tartat, Dodonowo and Schiwera.
history
The city emerged from 1950, when the Soviet Atomic Energy Ministry established the production of weapons- grade plutonium in the Schelesnogorsk nuclear facility (also known as the "Mining and Chemical Combine", Горно-химический комбинат ). The location of the plant was chosen for strategic and technical reasons: it is far from the national borders and the Yenisei could be used to treat cooling water .
In 1954 the place was given city status. The place name Schelesnogorsk has existed since the same year and means something like "city of iron mountains". Due to the secret status of the nuclear industry, the city officially only had the cover name Krasnoyarsk-26 during the Soviet era and was not shown on any map. Schelesnogorsk is still a closed city to this day, so entry for non-residents is only possible with a special permit.

Economy and Transport
Around 8,000 of the almost 100,000 inhabitants of Schelesnogorsk work in the nuclear facility . The other major industrial facility is ISS Reshetnev , a manufacturer of communications satellites. Over seventy percent of the Russian satellites were manufactured in Zheleznogorsk. In mid-April 2010 the last reactor in Russia for the production of weapons- grade plutonium in Zheleznogorsk was shut down.
The city has its own railway connection on a 30 km long branch line, with three stations on it within the city. One of these three stations ( Kombinat ) is located under the nuclear facility and is similar in construction to an underground station .
