The Classical Theater of Harlem (CTH) is a theater company founded in 1999 by Christopher McElroen and Alfred Preisser. She works in the New York borough of Harlem at the School for the Arts Theater .

history

The aim of the troupe is to bring classical music to Harlem, whereby classical does not just mean the "classical" pieces . Since it was founded, the CTH has staged twenty productions. These include Macbeth , Aint Supposed To Die A Natural Death , The Blacks: A Clown Show , Caligula and various other pieces for which the troupe has received a number of nominations and awards . In 2001 CTH was nominated for the OBIE, one of the highest awards in the USA for theater productions.

Renew Harlem as a "theater Mecca"

The troupe would like to receive professional theater work in Harlem and offer artists employment and training opportunities. In addition, a new, young audience is to be won over to the "classical" and Harlem is to be renewed as a "theater mecca".

Macbeth in the Heisterbach choir ruins

In June 2004 the Classical Theater of Harlem made a guest appearance at the "Biennale Bonn" with Macbeth . In the ruined choir of the Heisterbach monastery , Macbeth set off with African dance, music, singing and high rhythm in the fast-paced action about the tyrannical ruler, who is ultimately destroyed himself. The production with predominantly black artists showed the nightmarish nature of Shakespearean royal drama. Thirteen and not, as in the original, three witches - voodoo priestesses alike - symbolize the dark and unconscious of the piece.
