Tschunski ( Russian Чунский ) is an urban-type settlement in the Irkutsk Oblast ( Russia ) with 14,996 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The settlement is located on the western edge of the Angara ridge in the southern part of the Central Siberian Mountains , about 700 kilometers northwest of the Oblast capital Irkutsk . Not far from the village, the Tschukscha river flows into the river called Tschuna from around this area (further upstream Uda ). The river gave the settlement its name, which is the Russian adjective form of Tschuna .

Tschunski has been the administrative center of the Tschunski Rajons of the same name since 1953 .

history

The place was created when, after the end of the Second World War, the construction of the western section of the later Baikal-Amur main line from Taischet on the Trans-Siberian Railway via Bratsk to Ust-Kut ( Lena station ) on the Lena was resumed.

The year of foundation is 1947. Soon the place developed into one of the forestry centers of the area (next to the nearby Lessogorsk and Oktjabrski ) and in 1955 received the status of an urban-type settlement.

In 1958 the entire length of the railway line between Taischet and Ust-Kut was completed.
