history
The place arose around the turn of the 17th century under the name Argachan, after the name of the founder. In 1902 it was given its current name. The associated areas northwest of Lake Baikal , including the Bochanski rajon, formed the Ust-Ordynsk Buryat Autonomous Okrug on September 26, 1937 , which became a federation subject in Irkutsk Oblast on December 31, 2007 , but still has a special status. From 1965 to 1992 Bochan had the status of an urban-type settlement .
