Kosovo took part in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , Brazil, from August 5th to 21st, 2016. It was Kosovo's first participation in the Olympic Games after the country became a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC)in December 2014. The National Olympic Committee of Kosovo nominated a total of eight athletes, three men and five women, who will compete in five sports.
Judo world champion Majlinda Kelmendi carried the flag of her home country at the opening ceremony.
Serbia protested against Kosovo joining the IOC, considering the region an autonomous province . However, the Rio Games were not boycotted in memory of the negative effects of the Yugoslav exclusion in 1992. Kosovo was recognized by 109 UN member states at the start of the Games .

Judo
Two athletes had qualified for the Olympic Games: Nora Gjakova and Majlinda Kelmendi were among the 14 best judokas in the world in the IJF World Ranking on May 30, 2016. The latter competed for Albania in London in 2012 .
