The Team of Independent Olympians , Team IOT for short, was the name of the team of Kuwaiti athletes who started as Independent Olympians at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro . The background to this was that the National Olympic Committee of Kuwait was excluded from participation in the Rio Games by the IOC in October 2015 due to political interference.

The Olympic flag and the Olympic anthem were used as symbols of the team . The team was not to be confused with the refugee team , which also ran under the Olympic flag. The most successful Kuwaiti athlete to date, marksman Fehaid Al-Deehani , refused to carry the team's flag when he marched in, as he could only carry the Kuwait flag as a soldier.

Fehaid Al-Deehani won the competition in double trap , making him the first Kuwaiti and also the first independent athlete to win gold and a medal at the Olympic Games. No anthem was played when he won. Abdullah Al-Rashidi also won the bronze medal in the skeet. In the competition he wore an Arsenal jersey .
