East Timor took part inthe 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro . It was the fourth overall participation in the Summer Olympics (2000 as an independent Olympic participant ). The East Timors team has been in Rio de Janeiro since July 29, 2016 to acclimatize. The flag bearer at the opening ceremony was Francelina Cabral .

Running and walking

The women's prelims over 1500 meters took place on August 12th. Nélia Martins came in last of 41 runners who started. Augusto Ramos Soares did not do better in his lead on August 16. With 4: 11.35 he was the slowest runner to reach the finish.

Cycling

For the first time, an athlete from East Timor took part in a cycling competition at the Olympic Games. In the country, the Tour de Timor , a mountain bike race, takes place annually, which Francelia Cabral won in 2013 as the first East Timorese woman. In the cross-country race on August 20, however, it was lapped and finally came second to last. Only the French Pauline Ferrand Pevot was behind her as she did not finish the race.
