The Republic of Moldova took part in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro . It was the sixth participation in the Summer Olympic Games.

The flag bearer at the opening ceremony was the wrestler Nicolai Ceban .

Serghei Tarnovschi , who had won bronze in the single canoe over 1000 meters, was convicted of doping on August 18th. The medal was withdrawn from him.
