Sakshi Malik (born September 3, 1992 in Rohtak ) is an Indian wrestler .

biography

Sakshi Malik was born in 1992 as the daughter of a bus conductor and a manager of a health resort. According to her father, she wanted to become a wrestler at an early age, and was inspired by her grandfather Badlu Ram, who was also a wrestler. She started wrestling at the age of 12.

She celebrated her first international success at the 2010 Junior World Championships in Budapest when she won the bronze medal in the freestyle class up to 58 kg.

Four years later at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow she was able to win 4-0 in the quarterfinals against Edwige Ngono Eyia from Cameroon. In the semifinals, she met Braxton Stone from Canada, who she defeated 3-1. In the final, she lost to Aminat Adeniyi from Nigeria in a hard-fought battle and won the silver medals. At the 2014 World Championships in Tashkent , Malik was able to win 4-1 in the round of 16 against Anta Sambou from Senegal, but then lost to the Finnish Petra Olli with 1: 3.

At the 2015 Asian Championships in Qatar's capital Doha , Qatar, Malik fought for third place in the class up to 60 kg in a total of five rounds and finally won the bronze medal.

With a victory in the semifinals over the Chinese Zhang Lan at the Olympic World Qualification Tournament in May 2016, Malik qualified for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro . There she won her round of 16 fights against the Swede Johanna Mattsson and the Moldovan Mariana Cherdivara in the class up to 58 kg . After losing in the quarter-finals to the future finalist Sholobova from Russia, she qualified for the second round, in which she defeated Pürewdordschiin Orkhon from Mongolia in her first fight. With an 8: 5 win over the reigning Asian champion Aissuluu Tynybekowa from Kyrgyzstan, Malik secured the bronze medal.

Malik currently works for Indian Railways and is part of the JSW Sports Excellence program. After her bronze medal victory in Rio, she was promoted from executive to officer rank.

Malik holds a Masters Degree in Physical Education from Maharshi Dayanand University in Rohtak.

In an interview shortly after the Rio Olympics, Malik said that she was engaged to Satyawart Kadian , who is also a wrestler, and that they will get married. On April 2nd, 2017, the two wrestlers said yes in Rohtak. Among other things, besides the two-time Olympic medalist Sushil Kumar , the badminton player PV Sindhu was invited as a guest to the wedding.
