In Austria, the position on the ITU Olympic qualification list was decisive for the nomination. Two qualification races before the end of the qualification period, the Carinthians Lisa Perterer and Sara Vilic, with 16th and 31st place respectively on the qualification list, had such a large cushion of points on their pursuers that they could no longer be caught. With the men it was a tremendous game until the end. At the last qualification race in Yokohama, Thomas Springer slipped into the ranking on the 54th qualification place over the “European new flag” and was therefore proposed to the Austrian Olympic Committee for nomination together with Perterer and Vilic by the Austrian association Tri Austria . Lisa Perterer, who had already competed at the Olympic Games in London , suffered a fatigue fracture before the last medical check, so Julia Hauser was nominated again. Vilic, Hauser and Springer take part in the Olympic Games for the first time.
