Jördis Steinegger (born February 8, 1983 in Graz , Styria ) is a former Austrian professional swimmer .

Jördis Steinegger attended the Academic Gymnasium in Graz .

She achieved her first international successes as a swimmer in 1998 with first place in the 400 m freestyle at the Gymnasiade in Shanghai and at the 1999 European Youth Championships in Moscow (13th place in 400 m freestyle, 8th place in 4 × 100 m individual medley). As a temporary soldier in the Army Sports Center (HSLZ) of the Austrian Armed Forces , she took part in the 2003 Military World Championships in Catania (2nd place in lifeguarding , 4th place over 100 m freestyle, 4th place over 200 m freestyle, 4th place over 400 m Freestyle, 5th place over 200 m medley).

In the following years, Steinegger won numerous Austrian state and state championship competitions and achieved places in the top 20 in international World Cup, European Championship and World Championship races, including a third place in the 400 m freestyle at the Universiade in Bangkok .

As a member of the Austrian team , she took part in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing , where she set new Austrian records in the 200 m, 400 m and 800 m freestyle and 400 m medley. At the military world championships of the Conseil International du Sport Militaire in Warendorf in 2010 she won gold in the 200 m freestyle and 200 m obstacle swimming, as well as silver in the 400 m freestyle and came fourth in the 200 m back and over 200 m chest.

At the swimming world championships in July 2011 in Shanghai , China , Steinegger reached 13th place over the 400 m individual medley in 4: 41.33 minutes and thus qualified for participation one year before the start of the 2012 Olympic Games in London . The required limit is 4: 41.75 min. At the Universiade 2011 in Shenzhen , China, on August 16, 2011, she took third place in the 400 m medley course in 4: 43.30 minutes in the final and won the bronze medal for Austria behind the swimmers from the United States and Japan.

At the Swimming World Cup in Berlin on October 23, 2011, she was third behind the first-placed Japanese Izumi Kato (4: 31.93 min) in the final over the 400 m layered course on the short course (25 m) in a time of 4: 34.50 min. and the second placed Englishwoman Aimee Willmott (4: 34.27 min).

At the European Short Course Championships 2011 in Szczecin ( Poland ), Steinegger finished fifth over the 400 m layered course in the final on December 11th. In the run-up, she set a new Austrian short-track record in 4: 33.91 minutes over the same route.

In February 2017, she announced her retirement from swimming.

In her career, Steinegger was 102 times Austrian national champion (open class), 143 times Upper Austrian and 243 times Styrian regional champion.
