The Austrian Olympic Committee (ÖOC) nominated the Austrian team for the Summer Olympic Games in Beijing on July 21, 2008 . The team was sworn in by Federal President Heinz Fischer on July 22, 2008 . A total of 71 athletes from Austria traveled to Beijing . The largest line-up is provided by the swimming federation with twelve swimmers, three water divers and two synchronized swimmers, followed by the sailors and the beach volleyball teams.
After Tamira Paszek had beaten world number one Ana Ivanović at a tournament in Montreal on August 1, 2008 , both the Austrian Tennis Association and the International Tennis Federation campaigned for their subsequent nomination. This was rejected by the ÖOC on the grounds that the nomination deadline had already expired and Paszek's performance in the past year would not qualify her for participation in the Olympics. Paszek had achieved the international limits of the IOC for qualification, but not the stricter ones of the ÖOC, which, however, also applied to the three tennis players sent to Beijing by the ÖOC.
The nomination of the beach volleyball duo Sara Montagnolli / Sabine Swoboda was withdrawn by the ÖOC after ÖOC doctor Alfred Engel refused to take responsibility for any damage to health due to an acute back injury Swoboda. The quota place was returned to the IOC and enabled the participation of the Swiss Simone Kuhn / Lea Schwer .
